Fern Cottage is an attractive Warwickshire village property set within a conservation area on the edge of the Cotswolds. The property had a series of existing single storey extensions to the rear, which were not in a great state of repair or thermally efficient. Furthermore they lacked any real connection to the substantial garden beyond.
Hayward Smart Architects were asked to create an extension to provide a kitchen, utility and master bedroom suite, with attached single storey garden room, which would engage with the attractive gardens.
In order to achieve this improved connection, the garden room has full height glazing, set within Oak framing, that opens up on the corner to a private terrace and by cutting into the slope of the site.
At first floor, the timber framed structure over sails the masonry below and the private balcony to the bedroom floats over the garden beyond. Views of the landscaped gardens are framed from the bedroom.
Renewable installations include an air-source heat pump, rainwater harvesting and the provision for future photovoltaic panels.
