The existing dwelling is a well-proportioned 3 bedroom property constructed in red brick under a slate roof. The owner had found that the existing ground floor layout, consisting of a series of isolated rooms arranged around a large entrance hall, was not conducive to having a well-connected or open living experience.
The proposed single-storey extension to the south of the existing building serves to balance this arrangement and provides a large open-plan family kitchen, dining and sitting space with direct access out to the garden. Re-ordering of rooms in the main part of the house further improves the accommodation.
The new structure follows a traditional pitched roof form and has glazed gables facing northeast and southwest to capture morning and evening sunlight. Full height glazing and sliding doors to the southeast elevation will allow direct engagement with the garden. At first floor over the new dining space, a small dressing area with gallery is provided within the roofspace and accessed from the master bedroom.
The predominant facing materials include red brickwork and natural slate roofing, with powder coated aluminium door and window frames and flush mounted rooflights. Vertical timber board on board cladding, allowed to silver naturally, accentuates the subtle curves to the gable walls of the extension. The result is a natural light filled volume with direct visual and physical connections to the encompassing garden.
