Rather than undertaking alterations and extensions to the existing structures, the client appointed Hayward Smart to design a new home that would take full advantage of site and views whilst sitting harmoniously in the rural context of this Cotswold village.
The form of the house follows a traditional pitched roofline with a perpendicular gable projecting to the front. This south facing, largely glazed façade brings light deep into the building plan throughout the day, with vertical timber louvres preventing the space from overheating. The void over the snug creates a dramatic space that links to the walkway above at first floor level. From here panoramic views are afforded of the landscaping and garden room beyond.
Materials are drawn from the rural locality and include natural stone, render and timber weatherboarding to the external walls with a metal standing-seam roof. The utilitarian nature of the timber weatherboarding and metal roofing draws on agricultural buildings in the vicinity. The building was constructed in a highly insulated SIPS (structurally insulated panel) system to provide a thermally efficient building envelope as well reducing the construction time.
