The existing is a somewhat primitive single storey building constructed in the 1940’s, and then further extended in the 1960’s. Extensive works would be necessary to upgrade the existing construction to provide a modern, well insulated family home and it was therefore agreed that a replacement dwelling would be the most appropriate solution.
The new house will sit largely on the same footprint as the existing albeit with a rotated plan that allows for far reaching views being provided to the principle living spaces. Critically, the magnificent walnut tree will be retained. A cruciform plan was developed with an open plan kitchen and family room at its core. Views through the house in all directions are possible, taking in the countryside beyond.
The ground floor will have natural coursed Cotswold stone walls, with the first floor clad in vertical natural timber weatherboarding. Steeply pitched roofs, typifying properties in the local area, will be covered in standing seam metal roofing.
